There are three primary categories of water damage:
Category 1 water originates from a sanitary source and poses a very low risk to your health. These types of water losses occur when you have a broken water supply line, a sink or tub overflow, or falling rainwater entering your property.
Category 2 is water that is slightly to significantly contaminated with microorganisms or organic or inorganic matter. This contamination can cause illness, and this type of water can degrade over time into Category 3. Category 2 water may include discharge from a dishwasher or washing machine and overflowing toilets that do not contain feces or sewage.
Category 3 water should be considered grossly contaminated with pathogenic, toxigenic, and other hazards. Category 3 water losses include sewage backups originating beyond the trap and floodwaters.
