The first step is to identify any fire hazards around the holidays. Lorraine Carli, vice president of NFPA’s Outreach and Advocacy division, understands the importance of understanding fire hazards. • Holiday Cooking — Cooking is the number one cause of holiday fires in the country year-after-year. The NFPA reports a 72% increase in home cooking fires on holidays.
  • Holiday Trees — A fire caused by a holiday tree is a common occurrence. NIST reports over 200 home fires involving trees annually.
  • Decoration the Home — We all love to decorate, but you must be mindful of the items you use. Check for light strings for signs of damage, including frayed or chewed wires.
